CANSKATE
Canskate is a dynamic learn to skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. This program focuses on the development of three fundamental movements (balance, agility and control) organized into six stages of learning that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating. This program is for beginners of all ages, children or adults looking to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. Lessons are given in a group format with a coach to skater ratio of a maximum of 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate with badges being awarded once the skills on each stage are mastered. CSA approved hockey helmets are mandatory for skaters in stages 1 – 5. Private or semiprivate lessons can also be arranged with one of our certified professional coaches at your discretion.
All skaters must be registered with the club prior to skating on the ice. For safety reasons, skaters should wear gloves or mittens. Beginning skaters in CanSkate Levels 1 to 5 must wear an ice-approved helmet—a CSA approved hockey helmet that has not expired (cannot use past 5-year expiry date) – NO bicycle or skate-boarding helmets allowed. No parent or siblings will be allowed on the ice at any time. No food or drinks are allowed outside the designated eating areas, which are the warm room and bleachers. There is to be no food or drinks in any change rooms, or in the ‘visitors’ and ‘home boxes’. The board and the coaches would like to ask the parents once the skating session has started to please leave the penalty box area as this is distracting for both skaters and coaches. It is strongly recommended parents watch their children from the warm room area. Inclement Weather: Snowstorms or hazardous driving conditions may result in cancellations. A notice will also be published on Facebook and on the club website www.westelginskatingclub.ca. In some cases, these closures may occur without much notice. We will make every effort to make up sessions for cancellations due to inclement weather. Communication: News and information about the club and events is available from:
